Background of the Study:
Local government transparency is a cornerstone for fostering public trust and accountability in governance. In Yenagoa, efforts to increase transparency through open data initiatives and public accountability measures have been met with mixed results (Ibrahim, 2023). Transparency initiatives are intended to reduce corruption and promote citizen participation by ensuring that government actions are visible and subject to public scrutiny (Okoro, 2024). However, persistent gaps in information dissemination and bureaucratic opacity continue to challenge these efforts, affecting public perceptions and confidence (Eze, 2025). This study investigates how increased transparency in local government operations in Yenagoa influences public trust. It explores the mechanisms through which transparency measures are implemented and evaluates their effectiveness in curbing corruption and promoting democratic engagement (Okoro, 2024). The research will critically examine the role of transparency in building a more responsive and accountable local government.

Statement of the Problem:
In Yenagoa, despite initiatives to enhance transparency, there remains a significant gap between policy and practice. Inadequate disclosure of information and bureaucratic delays contribute to public skepticism and low trust in local governance. This study seeks to understand the underlying causes of these transparency gaps and their impact on public trust (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate transparency measures in Yenagoa’s local government.
  • To analyze the relationship between transparency and public trust.
  • To recommend strategies to improve transparency in local governance.

Research Questions:

  • How effective are current transparency measures in Yenagoa?
  • What is the relationship between government transparency and public trust?
  • What improvements can enhance transparency and accountability?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Enhanced transparency in local government positively impacts public trust.
  • H2: Information opacity correlates negatively with citizen confidence.
  • H3: Implementing regular public reporting improves transparency.

Significance of the Study:
This research highlights the importance of transparency in building public trust in Yenagoa’s local government. Its findings can inform policy interventions aimed at enhancing accountability and citizen engagement (Okoro, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining transparency initiatives and their impact on public trust within Yenagoa Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Transparency: The openness and accessibility of government information.
  • Public Trust: The confidence citizens place in their government institutions.
  • Local Government: The administrative body responsible for local public affairs.
